Turfgrass is a key element of public gardens, sports fields, botanical gardens, golf courses, business establishments, government and school buildings, private residences, and roadsides and right-of-ways. Turfgrasses cover more land area in the United States than any other agricultural crop. Thus, there are many diverse career options in the turfgrass and landscape industry.
Undergraduate Education
The Plant Biology undergraduate major at Rutgers University–New Brunswick offer students two options for students interested in turfgrass management and science, a Horticulture and Turf Industry Option (for students pursuing careers in the turfgrass industry) and a General Option (for students pursuing careers in research laboratories or graduate study).

Graduate Education
Students seeking careers in research have access to faculty mentors in a wide variety of disciplines including turfgrass management, pathology and pest management, plant breeding and genetics, and molecular biology. The Plant Biology Graduate Program at Rutgers University offers the master’s degree without thesis (M.S.), the master’s degree with thesis (M.S.), and the doctoral degree (Ph.D.).
Greenhouse and research facilities and equipment are extensive. Fieldwork may be performed in any of several experiment stations.
Continuing Education
The Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) provides educational opportunities for adults through short courses in turfgrass and landscape management. These short courses enrich adults through training on state-of-the-art knowledge and practices in turfgrass and landscape management. Many short courses offer a certificate upon completion of the course. Short courses vary from ½-day to 20-week programs.
