Anthracnose (basal rot) symptoms have been developing on our research plots for a couple weeks now (see image from 13 June above).
Good cultural management practices can help reduce the severity of this disease. Remember that a good fungicide program is only as good as the cultural management practices that accompany it.
Routine low doses of nitrogen fertility such as “foliar feeding”, spring topdressing combined with light and frequent summer todpressing, higher mowing and rolling, and proper monitoring and application of essential plant nutrients are all best management practices that help to suppress the severity of this potentially devastating disease.
For more details see our summary of BMPs and other publications on anthracnose.
